A "Block the Empire" crowd of several hundred also massed in front of the St-Alexandre street building which houses the American consulate. A few dozen cops in riot gear were already present, facing down pro-Palestinian protesters as well a group of young people with red-and-black flags. The tension rose as the crowd chanted, and some violent confrontations took place at around 4 p.m. as more police officers arrived on the scene. According to eyewitnesses, the police did not discriminate, using their nightsticks on guys and girls alike. Small amounts of pepper spray were also used repeatedly by the cops.

People were hit and pushed around by the cops during an aggressive police manouever which split the crowd in two parts and emptied St-Alexandre street. Progressively, the cops pushed the eastern part of the crowd down the hill, and eventually the protesters dispersed to the sound of drumming and chanting. A handful of people got arrested.
