Inspector testifies on police corruption in WA
A serving police officer has told the Western Australian
Police Royal Commission cannabis was kept hidden at stations to plant on
offenders.
The officer is the first serving policeman to testify about corruption in
the service.
Code-named L-8, the officer has spent more than 30 years in the police
service. He has risen to the rank of Inspector.
He has told the royal commission that he witnessed and took part in
assaults on suspects.
He also falsified their statements, although only when he believed they
were guilty.
L-8 corroborated earlier evidence that police took property and money
seized during raids admitting that one search had been conducted because
it was an opportunity to get some cash.
As well, the inspector said cannabis had been hidden at a police station
for the purpose of planting on uncooperative suspects, although he had
never seen it happen.
While L-8 is the fifth person to testify about corruption within the
police service he is the first serving officer to 'roll over', although
he says he now plans to submit his resignation.
