The activities of the theory group of GAP-Optique are twofold. On the one hand, we work in close collaboration with the other members of GAP to provide them with theoretical support. This is a very enriching task for everybody, since it bridges the gap between the mathematical, abstract rigor of the theoretician, and the intuitive arguments that the experimentalist derive from their activities in the lab. On the other hand, we are working on several topics of quantum information theory. In choosing the themes for these investigations, we try to keep a good balance between "foundations" and "applications". In this sense, one of the more interesting results recently is the discovery that the violation of Bell's inequalities detects entanglement strong enough to be "useful" for cryptography, teleportation and other applications of quantum information processing.
