There aren't many people who want(ed) this feature, so why should
it be turned on for everyone? Moreover, it only works for some
AUTH methods, so it's not a complete solution.

What do you mean by "a macro"?  It's a compile time option, not a
run time option.  I don't see how a (cf/mc?) "macro" could be involved
here and what the purpose/benefit would be.
