Shura Vaisman passed away earlier this year after a decades-long struggle with cancer (http://www.vaisman.org/shura/zl/). An accomplished biomedical scientist by day, she pursued a number of diverse creative hobbies in her spare time. Many of her projects were focused on her beloved hometown. In the mid-1990s Shura designed http://czernowitz.org - one of the very first websites dedicated to Czernowitz. In 2008 she created a website (http://www.czernowitz.org/2008/) and a program book (http://www.czernowitz.org/2008/conference_program.pdf) for the centennial Yiddish language conference in Chernivtsi.
In 2009 Shura made a video clip (https://youtu.be/2hnhq3nHfl4) for a song by Russian poet and singer-songwriter Mikhail Shcherbakov. This song is a quest in search of a lost place and time. Its lyrics is a message addressed to a future local historian with the instructions on how to find and understand the narrator's place of origin (the English translation of the lyrics can be found at http://www.vaisman.org/shura/1992_koi.html). The song and the clip can serve as a powerful metaphor for any effort to preserve the ephemeral memories of everchanging physical and cultural realities. Shura made valuable contributions to such efforts. May her memory be a blessing.
