Dear Bukowiners,

It’s interesting to read the discussion about Facebook possibilities.
Personally, I feel that the group in its present format is highly valuable, and
since we would inevitably lose members in a move to Facebook, I’d also like to
keep our Czernowitz-L email discussion group in its present format. Besides,
there are already several Facebook groups for Jewish Bukovina, the Czernowitz
Jewish Cemetery, Gura Humora Jewish Community, Romanian Jews, and more.

Edgar, Jerome and I recently made some changes to help perpetuate our group
postings for anyone wishing to search for specific information, or anyone doing
historical research. To us, our archives of postings are a treasure trove of
information. Recent changes have also allowed for non-Plain Text postings, as
well as attached files under 1MB in size. David points out that Facebook posts
are difficult to search, and I’d agree. You can find our own mailing archive
at the bottom of this email, and older postings can be found on the
Czernowitz.ehpes.com website.

I’m reassured to hear that a number of members enjoy and value this group; I’ve
learned so much for all of you.

Warmest wishes always,
Bruce Reisch

Dear all,
I'd also like to add my view on this. I prefer the email group from which I
learned immensely in the last couple of years. There is one other instance in
which I found out that Facebook can be helpful (connected to my current
research topics), but I tend to dislike public postings and those rather
trivial or simplistic pictures or emoticons most users feel inclined to use as
their means of expression. While some postings and reactions may appear
appealing they are also highly annoying and repetitive. I personally prefer the
informative and friendly format of this email group.
of course, a majority may decide upon it and I am willing to accept what most
members decide,

kind regards
Dana

The idea of switching this email list to Facebook has been mooted. I am
a member of several Facebook groups. I find the presentation, and the
ease of inclusion of photographs, seductively attractive. But, in my
view, Facebook has disadvantages which render it unsuitable for this group.

* I find the order of posts extremely confusing.
* Once posts have receded into the past, it becomes more and more
difficult to find them. This negates part of the purpose of this group,
which is to serve as an archive regarding Czernowitz.
* What is the situation regarding copyright and intellectual property?
I have not read the small print, but I would not be surprised to find
that all the content belongs to Facebook.
* In which case, it is not impossible that the whole archive might
disappear at any time.

Best wishes to all,

David
