Czernowitzers... Yesterday, 80 years ago, 19 April 1943 marks the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, in which Jewish inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto fought against the Nazi regime. On the very same day, a train called „Transport XX“ left Dossin Barracks in Mechelen in Belgium. It was holding 1,631 Jews. Their destination was the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. Three lone men ambushed the train and freed seventeen men and women before the German guards opened fire. Miraculously, by the time the convoy had reached the German border another 225 prisoners had managed to escape unharmed and found shelter with the locals. Marion Schreiber's book "The Twentieth Train" published in German in 2000 and also available in French and Dutch, tells the story:
https://www.discoveringbelgium.com/april-19-1943-train-auchswitz/ Between the summer of 1942 and the summer of 1944, over 25,000 of these people were deported by 28 trains from Dossin Barracks just like my uncle Maximilian Hauster, born on 26 November 1909 in Czernowitz, deported with Transport 19 of 14 January 1943: http://hauster.blogspot.com/2013/10/auschwitz-seventy-kilometers-east-of.html Among the portraits of deportees we succeeded to identify 97 out of 104 deportees, who had their roots in Bukovina: http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/2013/12/mecheln-auschwitz-1942-1944-destruction.html Leon Messing, born on 12 June 1927 in Czernowitz, was 15 years old and the youngest deportee from Bukovina on the date of departure of Transport 10 on 15 December 1942. The oldest deportee from Bukovina was Abraham Moses Reder, born on 17 August 1866 in Czernowitz, i. e. he was 76 years old on the date of deportation on Transport 11 of 26 September 1942. Neither would return in 1945.
