Czernowitzers…

I have already quoted the letter of my grandfather Elias Hauster of 07.10.1948
to his youngest son, my father, Julius Hauster, in the previous post from Iași.
We continue reading: "The "Bursa" director, together with his very
distinguished wife, came to Czernowitz to see us and for years - until the end
of his life - he sent me the "Bursa" [The Stock Exchange] free of charge. He
might have left two sons, also daughters, all of them returned to their
ancestral Christian faith and married to Christians, respectively Christian
women. So if you should come across one of this clan, it might be good to
freshen up relations. Since your divorce, we have a real ravenous appetite for
you [...] for new, kinship relationships."

Elias was right, because the Hussar family, now living in Bacău and Bucharest,
knew nothing of their Jewish roots until I contacted them. In Bacău I met with
Ion Șerban Hussar, a great-grandson of the publisher Iosif Hussar (old photo,
center). The Great Synagogue in Bacău, also known as the Cereal Mearchants’
Synagogue, almost fell victim to Ceaușescu's so-called systematization program.
It is still there and being renovated, but it is surrounded on all sides by
poor communist-era apartment blocks; its location could hardly be more
inhospitable.
