Dear Edgar, dear all,
I have become a silent reader and contributor to your wonderful blog even after
having finished my Selma Merbaum biography. There is still so much to learn...
Three years after publication, Joseph Eshet wrote to me: not only were he and
his parents in the Cariera de piatra camp with Selma, but they even shared the
same barrack. Joseph was six years old at the time. Selma looked after the
children in the camp to protect them from the cruelty. She taught them a lot
about nature.
Joseph's valuable information has been included in the new edition of my book.
Once again, thank you and all members for this valuable block and the incredible
work against forgetting. Today the links to the marriage and death dates... I
appreciate ever so much.
With many thanks,
Marion

Dear Ellen,

You wrote: I saw your post that includes obituary links from 1936-1940. I was
interested in the obit for Solomon Katz in 1939. However when I clicked on the
link I could not locate obituaries. Not knowing German I did use google
translation but to no avail. I’m probably doing something wrong. Can someone
help me out?

First of all hafe at the newspaper clipping and discover Salomon Katz, 70 years
old, Asachi Street no. 4.

Well, if you are clicking on the hyperlink in the list, you will be taken to the
newspaper page containing the death or marriage announcement respectively. Even
if you can read German, it is difficult to read the old German script. At the
top left you will discover the “T” symbol. This is a tool for transcribing the
text, but we have to admit that the AI also has its limits and the
transcriptions are quite faulty; nevertheless, this would be an option to get
ahead, possibly with the help of an online translator.

I hope I have helped you and others with this hint. Warmest wishes!

1936-1940 - COMPLETED

Czernowitzers...

Published between 1924-1940, the the Czernowitzer Deutsche Tagespost [Czernowitz
German Daily Post] was a staunchly nationalist-ethnic paper and after 1933 a
mouthpiece of the German Reich Ministry of Propaganda. Normally a NO-GO, BUT:
While the newspaper agitated against Czernowitz Jews and marginalized them, it
nevertheless recorded the WEDDINGS & DEATHS in the city with Teutonic
thoroughness.

ON THIS BASIS WE HAVE CREATED A DATABASE FOR THE YEARS 1936-1940, DISPLAYING
8,116 DEATHS AND 3,754 MARRIAGES:

http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/2009/11/joy-sorrow.html

WHY IS THE DATABASE SO SIGNIFICANT FOR THE INTERWAR PERIOD IN CZERNOWITZ?

• There is virtually no publicly available data for this period; the data at
FamilySearch ends in 1929 and the local archives have other priorities at the
moment.

• From 1930 onwards, the civil status data (births, marriages, deaths) in
Bukovina were no longer kept separately by denomination, but centrally at the
registry offices.

• From 1936-1940, the Czernowitzer Deutsche Tagespost published the marriages
and deaths almost daily according to the information from the Czernowitz
registry office.

• The reports often also contain addresses and professions, which are on display
in the respective newspaper editions and can be accessed via hyperlinks.

We wish you genealogical hits with the new resource and we'd like to invite you
to share your discoveries with us!
