Hi David,

OCR in combination with Google Translate - or even better DeepL - works
perfectly, the translation is accurate. OCR is already included in DiFMOE,
under the “T” symbol (top left) there is a transcription that can be processed
further.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions. Warmest wishes!

Thank you very much, Edgar! I’ve seen references to DiFMOE before, but this is
my first time searching the resource. Here’s an interesting find:

https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:931bc503-a2a5-4f5a-929e-8aae199ae416

DR. ELIAS FELDER - 70 YEARS

The former Czernowitz lawyer, Dr. Elias Felder, recently turned 70. On this
occasion, the person celebrating the anniversary, who enjoys general sympathy,
received numerous congratulations from friends and acquaintances. Dr. Felder
was active in Bukovina’s Zionist-socialist workers' parties for many years.

I believe this references “my” Elias FELDER; I will continue the search.

I do not read German; my workflow involves using OCR integrated into the
Preview app on macOS and Google Translate.

Dear David,

What you write is very interesting and your remarks about the profession and
street names are to the point. As far as your research is concerned, if you
enter “Elias FELDER” or “Max FELDER” (with quotation marks) in the DiFMOE
search, you will get numerous hits:

https://www.difmoe.eu

There are 27 mentions for Max Felder, whereby both articles in “Die Stimme”
(01-SEP-1965/01-OCT-1980), but above all the article in the “Czernowitzer
Allgenmeine Zeitung” of 17-AUG-1930 seems particularly interesting to me.
According to it, “the wedding of the lawyer Dr. Elias Felder with Miss Grete
Elling, daughter of the bank procurator Dawid Elling” was to take place on the
same day.

There are 5 mentions for Max Felder, whereby the article in “Die Stimme” from
01-DEC-1947 seems particularly interesting to me. According to it, “Advocate
Dr. Felder” and “the former functionary of the Czernowitz city magistrate Max
Felder” were staying in Vaslui in the Moldau.

The other articles, which I have not looked at in detail, may also be very
informative for you. Good luck with your research and warmest wishes!

Bruno ROLL of Czernowitz

I have in my possession the minutes book of the SCHILDER Cousin Club
(1940-1960), which documents the meetings of the Jewish family club formed by
the descendants of three SCHILDER sisters — Anna, Bertha, and Goldie — who
emigrated to Chicago in the early 1900s from Czernowitz. The book references
“cousins” in “Romania” after the war to whom the club was sending letters and
care packages and from whom they were receiving letters. (Unfortunately, I do
not have copies of these letters; they only reference them being read during
club meetings.) I am looking for descendants or relatives of Dr. Elias FELDER;
a Max FELDER is also mentioned in the minutes.

The Czernowitz phonebook, ca 1924-25, lists Dr. Elias Felder, Max, and
Samuel/Schmiel (probably sons) at “str. Vilson 13.” The old name for Vilson was
Liliengasse, and the new name was Constantin Brancoveanu. The street may also
be referred to as Synagogengasse or Sinagogei. The Romanian word “croitor”
means tailor. I believe “funct.” is an abbreviation for the Romanian word
“funcționar,” which means “clerk.”

The renaming of streets in Chernivtsi primarily reflected the political and
ideological changes occurring in the region after World War I, as different
powers sought to assert their influence over the area.

Documents from Yad Vashem indicate that Elias, Max, and Samuel were all sent to
forced labor camps in the 1942-43 timeframe. Samuel/Schmiel was murdered in the
Shoah.

Also mentioned as a “cousin” is Fritzi ROLL, who emigrated to Tel Aviv; I do
not know the relationship between Fritzi and the SCHILDER sisters.

Any information you can share would help me tie together these potentially
related branches of my family.

Thanks!
