Thank you for the little window onto our shared heritage, through the lens and
voice of a thoughtful witness. The reverberations of voices quieted by time are
much appreciated.

 Czernowitzers...

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE READ IN MY EYES!

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 06-SEP-1945. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

“Dear Dr. Weinstein, if I could ever experience the feeling that was called
‘joy’ until around 1939, then your two answers, so fine and humanly felt - the
published and the private one - would certainly have triggered it in me. So,
with my emotional life burnt out on its way through so many hells, I could only
feel a faint wave of gratitude that I am still occasionally remembered there,
in your land, where people are still alive, not merely vegetating as otherwise
purposeless links between a poverty-stricken kitchen and the latrine.

To see myself in print again was not a little thing for me, after I had only
found my name in deportation, forced labor, emigration, and support lists since
my "capitis deminutio maxima". My self-confidence rose even more from about
zero to zero, point, one, when I told myself that the literary connection with
the Bukovinian circle in the Land of Israel would also secure me a necrology in
some form, as soon as I had done my part, in other words, as soon as I had
finally given up the already hopeless struggle with the complete lack of
calories, vitamins and the usual means of circulation (also called parale [rom.
coll.], currency, money and pecunia). The package you so kindly sent me remains
also a long, dark dream. Before it reaches me, it will pass through many, oh,
so many hands, and each of these hands has fingers, oh, so long fingers.“

These are the first two paragraphs of a letter addressed by Dr. Karl Horniker
(Radautz) to Dr. Elias Weinstein under the headline “OUR LIVES ARE JUST
MEMORIES ... How the returnees from Transnistria live”. As a native German
speaker, I don't know how much is lost in the English translation, but in the
original German version, this is art at the highest level. The literary skill
and sensitivity with which Karl Horniker manages to describe the fate of a
Jewish family before, during and after the Holocaust in Bukovina and
Transnistria is absolutely fascinating. Similar letters from the years
1946-1949 are also available from my grandfather Elias Hauster, also from
Radautz. I don't know whether Karl and Elias ever met, but in any case they are
united in the outstanding book “Resettlers & Survivors” by Gaëlle Fisher.

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
