Fascinating little passage. I like the "born in Austria, lived in Romania" part, especially - Eytan Eytan Fichman B.Arch., M.Arch., Ed.M. 42 / 11 Trần Bình Trọng,Ngô Quyền, Hải PhòngViệt Nam On Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 03:26:34 AM GMT+7, Edgar Hauster <bconc...@hotmail.com> wrote: Czernowitzers...
A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 03-JAN-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then! When “Die Stimme” reported on Marguerite Kozenn-Chajes in 1946 under the headline “BUKOWINA IN AMERICA”, she had already been in the USA for six years: „Mrs. Kozenn. We have learned that our compatriot and well-known singer Mrs. M. Kozenn lives in Detroit-Michigan U.S.A. She and her husband, Julius Chajes, conductor and composer (his compositions are frequently performed on the local radio) have a good reputation in the American music world. Her busy career as an opera and concert singer in Detroit and New York (where she gave a major concert in New York's Town Hall in October 1945) did not prevent her from taking part in the relief campaign for our Czernowitzers in Siberia (Dr. Gutherz etc. etc.) together with the wife of Dr. Kissmann. Mrs. Kozenn's parents, Lazar Schieber and wife, as well as her daughter from her first marriage currently live in Bucharest.“ Marguerite Kozenn-Chajes (1909-2000) never forgot or denied her roots. She once said so aptly for Bukovinians of her generation: „You know what it means to be born in Czernowitz? He or she was born in Austria, lived in Romania and died in Russia without ever leaving the city!” https://www.chambersoloistsdetroit.org/founder-marguerite-kozenn-chajes/ https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:5b497f52-fb50-4ccb-b8a1-b88fa68bed7f Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
