Czernowitzers... A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 01-SEP-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
“A lot of true, but also a lot of nonsensical stuff is talked around, much of it irresponsibly printed, creating an unbearable atmosphere. It is not cool reflection, not deep insight into the global political situation that is decisive, but the catchword and the political phrase, often borrowed from the terminology of fascism and hailed by the street as the ultimate wisdom and trumpeted by a certain press as the final goal, as a means to the final goal in all directions.” Does that sound familiar to you? Wrong, this is not a commentary from your yesterday’s daily newspaper, but printed in “Die Stimme” in September 1946 as “THOUGHTS ON ROSH HASHANAH”. But let's go back in time seven years and follow at a Rosh Hashanah anecdote from 1939: “CZERNOWITZ BY BUS On the way to Jerusalem a few days ago, I got talking to an engineer who comes from Poland and has lived here in the country for several years. He told me about the perilous circumstances under which he and his family fled Poland in 1939 and how, on Rosh Hashanah of the same year, he got stuck in Grigori Ghica Voda, the Romanian border station, without a penny and in terrible despair. He remembered a chance railroad acquaintance, the Czernowitz merchant Elias Luft, and informed him of his situation through a messenger. Three hours later - Czernowitz is 30 kilometers from Ghica Voda - a car arrived to take the engineer and his relatives to the city, where Luft received them with touching attention. Yes, that's how they do it in Czernowitz…” https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:84ca633b-e68e-4021-bd14-f6d51a274142 Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
