Czernowitzers...
A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 01-DEC-1947. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
Mathias Roll was a prominent personality in Bukovina, as director of the Austrian Merkurbank from Vienna, Czernowitz branch, and as a supraregional renowned economist. In November 1947, “MATHIAS ROLL WRITES TO ‘DIE STIMME’” and ends his letter as follows:
“[...] And now something purely personal: I went with my son, who lived with us, on the first repatriation transport, to Bucharest and then to Temesvar, where I stayed for two years, acquired some friends and was able to state that the 'Morgenblatt' and
also Ebner's 'Ostjüdische' are still very well remembered today. My son here took me in after his return from Washington, where he worked throughout the war, interrupted only by alternating flights to Europe on official business. For the time being - I've
been here for six months - I'm doing nothing but walking in the beautiful countryside, reading a lot and trying to relax. I was already very physically run down. I live here in Beaconsfield, a beautifully situated town in a lovely setting where many statesmen,
writers and scholars have lived. [...]”
The son Mathias is talking about is Eric Roll (1907-2005), Baron Roll of Ipsden since 1977. He has had a breathtaking career as an economist, as a civil service senior official and as an international banker.

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.
I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
