Czernowitzers...

Through our friend Marc Goldberger, we received a message from Serhii Valov,
Director of the film “The History of the Synagogues of Chernivtsi.” We find
this to be a very interesting project and would therefore like to appeal to the
“collective memory” of our 500+ members with the request to support Serhii in
any way possible. Thank you in advance!

Shalom.

My name is Serhii. I’m Jew, I live in Chernowitz. And I need your help!

I am a member of Jewish community “Aviv”. We are working on a documentary film
dedicated to the history of synagogues in Chernivtsi — a city that, before
World War II, was a major Jewish cultural center. According to archival data,
there were over 80 synagogues and prayer houses here.

I am reaching out to you with a request. If your grandparents or other
relatives were born in Chernivtsi and ever told you about the pre-war Jewish
life of the city — please share with us those memories. Perhaps they mentioned
which synagogue they attended, who prayed there, what happened on weekdays and
holidays. Or perhaps your family has preserved old photographs — of streets,
synagogues, community events, or even the interiors of prayer houses.

Every recollection, every detail — is invaluable. Our goal is not just to list
the lost heritage, but to bring it to life through personal stories. Your
contribution could become an important part of this great mosaic of memory.

I would be deeply grateful for any information — texts, photographs, names, or
simply stories passed down from your relatives.

With respect and gratitude,
Serhii Valov,
Director of the film “The History of the Synagogues of Chernivtsi”
