Happy Hanukah to everyone!

No babies were born, but this year brought special joy to our family. My
oma, Nelly Czubata Leichihman, and her brother Poldy Czubata left Romania
in 1965. They were grew up in Czernovitz but moved to Bucharest after the
war and started families.

My mother and her cousin were 12 years old when they left Romania. My oma’s
family moved to America. Her brother’s family moved to Israel. The last
time my mom saw her cousin was at the age of 17 when she traveled to Israel
to work on a kibbutz.

Finally, after more than 50 years, my mom made it back to Israel last
spring and reunited with her cousin. They kissed and touched each other’s
faces and sat close together on the sofa, as if needing a physical reminder
that they were indeed both there together. Many tears flowed.

Were my Oma still alive, she would have loved this group. She loved her
roots and childhood before the war in Little Vienna, as she called it,
fiercely. Thank you for awakening little memories of her with the messages
that pop up throughout the year.

Wishing everyone health and happiness in the year ahead,
Devorah
