In our case it says the date of the burial (10.12.1898). Based on information we found in the diaries of his son Pinus Rubinstein (Ben-Saar), he was buried on the same graveyard as his widow Sara (died 2.10.1933) and his daughter Berta Shmatnik (30.4.1933). Those graves are on the Jewish Cemetery in Czernowitz, we have pictures of the headstones.Sent from my iPhone the death records in pre -war Czernowitz state the location of the burial? Dear all,
I am researching Mordechai (Markus) Rubinstein, father of Pinus, Nomi, Berta, and Leon Rubinstein, and the great-great-great-grandfather of my partner.
According to the Czernowitz Jewish death registers, Markus Rubinstein died on 8 December 1898 in Czernowitz at the age of 32 (born ca. 1866). His occupation is listed as house or decorative painter (Zimmermaler), and his place of birth is given as “Mogolow, Russia” (then part of the Russian Empire). These data match precisely—chronologically, biographically, and geographically—Mordechai (Mordco) Rubinstein, husband of Sara Rubinstein and father of the four children named above. This identification can therefore be made with a high degree of confidence and is fully consistent with the biographical information found in the diary of his son, Pinus Rubinstein.
Mordechai Rubinstein died in the Jewish Hospital in Czernowitz. Multiple diary entries make it clear that he was buried in the Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz. His grave, however, has not been located. It may be among graves that have not yet been identified, or it may no longer be identifiable after more than 128 years.
An additional contextual clue appears in the diary of Pinus Rubinstein. In an entry dated 16 December 1900, Pinus notes (paraphrased) that his mother returned home with the youngest sister, while the older sister, Nomi, remained with their grandfather in Russia. This reference places the previous generation within the Russian Empire, though it remains unclear whether it refers to the maternal grandfather (the father of Sara Rubinstein) or the paternal grandfather (the father of Mordechai Rubinstein).
Based on the wording “Mogolow, Russia,” two possible birth locations have been suggested: Mohyliv-Podilskyi (formerly Mogilev-Podolsky, today Ukraine), approximately 120–130 km from Czernowitz, and Mogilev (today Belarus), approximately 700–750 km from Czernowitz. Based on distance alone, Mohyliv-Podilskyi lies much closer to Czernowitz than Mogilev in Belarus.
The current research goal is to determine which of these locations is the correct place of birth and to identify any available birth records or references to the parents and possible siblings of Mordechai Rubinstein, born around 1866. Any guidance on relevant Jewish vital records, revision lists, or regional archives would be greatly appreciated.
Jens
