Interesting how his insights foreshadowed future events, as you alluded. I
would also say he was a very observant individual, intuned to the surroundings
as well as as his fellow man.
Thank you,Leah Snider

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-OCT-1957. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

In October 1957, the Western world was in shock after the Soviet Union
announced the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite. The
October 1957 issue of “Die Stimme” reported on this, as well as on Dr. Erich
Neuberger’s visit to Israel. He writes: “And I would like to mention one more
kibbutz, Kibbutz Nahal Oz, because of its exposed location: It lies right on
the Gaza border, not far from the UN police station, and through binoculars we
can see Gaza itself. It was a thrilling feeling to know that we were standing
at the epicenter of intense international tension and perhaps future
international entanglements.” That was truly a terrible prophecy! Isn’t it
awful, and was it really impossible to prevent the Nahal Oz Massacre from
occurring there on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists stormed the kibbutz
and killed at least 15 civilians and over 60 soldiers? Another 16 people were
taken hostage and abducted to the Gaza Strip. In addition, we read in this
issue of “Die Stimme” on the RAW KOOK PRIZE AWARDED TO RABBI MESHULEM RATH.
Rabbi Meschulem Rath is honourably mentioned several times in the “Jubilee
Edition Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the [Czernowitz] Temple, Chanukah
5698 / November 28, 1937”.

“According to ‘Maariv,’ this year's Raw Kook Prize from the Tel Aviv
Municipality will be awarded to Rabbi Meshulem Rath. Rabbi Rath, who served for
a number of years as the community rabbi for the Orthodox community in
Czernowitz, is widely regarded as one of the most eminent scholars in the field
of Jewish literature. Meshulam Rath is a member of the highest rabbinical
authority in Israel.

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
