So how about this: if they are on Windows, assume MDI unless they override it in settings_override.py. And then provide methods to let them change their mind. Remember, 'dForm' is simply a name, and it can be re-assigned:

>>> print dForm
<class 'dForm.dFormSDI'>
>>> from dForm import dFormChildMDI as dForm
>>> print dForm
<class 'dForm.dFormChildMDI'>

    Does that sound less draconian?
