John, I think you are right. If a specific application needs to get NULL 
from user input, that application can put in the means to do so. The 
major place where I see this would be in survey-type data where there 
are answers like yes/no, a/b/c/d, etc. None would say "didn't respond to 
this question". Ditto for scientific test data: None means "no data", 
where 0 would mean "measured 0". The user would have to have the ability 
to re-set the None value if they mistakenly filled in the wrong field at 
first.
