I tested the firebird backend (fb 2.0.1, kinterbasdb 3.3_pre_20070503,
python 2.5, wxGTK 2.6.3.0, opensuse 10.2, dabo rev 3107) with a db created
with UTF8 charset and connection-charset UTF8.
Non-ascii characters did work as expected.
