I withdraw my report that there's a problem here. I can't come up with a reduced-down test that exhibits the issue, and when I reviewed and rewrote parts of some functions called in the onNew() and afterNew() hooks, the problem went away.
So, let's chalk it up to bad code on my part that (for some still unknown reason) happened to become obvious with commit 3925.
