I don't have time to spend on the 3.x conversion. BTW, 3.0 has been out
for some time; right now 3.2 is in late beta.

Right, and that's fine. Dicts work fine without the keys() calls, for
several 2.x versions now. Changing range() to xrange() is akin to changing
items() to iteritems(): better for 2.x, but will need to be reverted for 3.x.
