Clone the repo, not the branch. Checkout the branch from the cloned repo:

## should show "on branch phoenix"

Thanks everyone for your patience. I had created a repo of the entire C
drive at some point and that was preventing me from seeing any branches.
It took a while to realize exactly why I couldn't see the branches. But
I knew I wasn't typing the commands wrong so I kept researching until I
saw that some person had exactly the same problem and they had done
exactly the same thing. Easy fix just remove the .git and all started
working.
