Jacek, I had the keep alive interval set for every minute but the connection was still being closed after 5 minutes of inactivity. I am not sure why, though it might be because we aren't querying against any database objects... The keep alive interval also doesn't solve the issue of sleeping a laptop and coming back a few hours later.
