Well, like I said, this was just a hack I threw together in an airport
last year. At some point we really need to add a clear option for
ordering.

I can't agree more. IMO, the API stuff is only of limited use. In your
case, it wouldn't have helped you at all.
What we need is a bunch of "how-to" documents: sort of like a FAQ for
developers. We're trying to address that partly with out screencasts,
but there is no substitute for written docs.
Who knows - maybe after my PyCon presentation today, there will so
much excitement that we'll get volunteers to help us write these docs!
