We can convert to it on Linux if that is what is required, and then it can still be viewed on the Mac.

What's so proprietary? The SWF format is open, and the player is free and ubiquitous.

It isn't such a problem, until it starts keeping us from being able to harness some great open source tools such as Transana. I don't want the decision to be "we can't use transana because transana doesn't read swf".
