i have x-xhat installed too, but find that I almost exclusively use
Gaim, mostly because it supports icq, msn and jabber that I need to use
occasionally.

The irc support is actually, quite good; when I was on windows I used
gaim on that as well. There are some quirks, but the are either easy to
get used to or not that bothersome :-)

Unless you have particular needs, chances are that gaim is good enough
for what you need.
