OK, this is really odd. I started testing on WinXP, and used the
pymssql installer. After that, I was able to connect and do
everything that I could do yesterday from my Mac after modifying the
pymssql file. So I reverted my Mac's pymssql file, and now it's
working fine without my mods!

So please disregard all of the steps quoted above. I probably had an
old copy of the file hanging around from earlier testing. Now the
steps are:

1) Download and install FreeTDS if you are running Linux/OS X. NOTE:
FreeTDS must be configured with --enable-msdblib to return correct
dates! See README.freetds for details.

2) Download and install pymssql.py from their site: http://
pymssql.sourceforge.net/. Windows users can run the installer that it
comes in; Mac/Linux users just unpack and run 'sudo python setup.py
install'.

3) Make sure that you have the latest and greatest Subversion copy of
dabo/db/dbMsSQL.py

Now you're ready to rock with Microsoft SQL Server!
