What you need to do is quote and respond to the relevant sections of the 
email, and trim everything else. So, for instance, I'm responding to the 
above paragraph of yours. So I hit "reply" in Thunderbird, and then I 
snipped everything else but the above paragraph, and started typing.

What the listserver does is looks for the footer ("post messages to 
dabo-users...") and snips that and everything after it.

What you were doing before was to quote the entire message, and post 
your comments below the quoted footer from the listserver. So your 
comments got snipped.

It is always good to quote the parts of the message you are replying to, 
to give context. It is always bad to quote an entire message.
