        Right now I'd say do your menus with .py scripts. I tried to make the  
MenuDesigner to be an example of low-level drawing routines, but the  
differences between platforms made this very difficult to manage. It's  
been over a year since I've spent any time on it, simply because other  
things were more pressing, and creating menus in code isn't all that  
tough. If you want examples of coded menus, both Editor.py and  
ClassDesignerMenu.py have code that should show you what you need to  
do to. And, of course, if something isn't clear, please let us know.
