        OK, this is my mistake. Nothing is being saved, but the code is  
calling the new() anyway. I've modified the Step-By-Step guide with  
code to check for an attempt to save and empty record. I've also re- 
arranged some of the discussion of before- and after- hooks; let me  
know if the new version is clear.
