        I just created a menu shortcut in the Terminal app on Debian. It 
wouldn't let me create a plain 'Escape' shortcut, but I was able to create 
'Ctrl+Escape', and that's how it appeared. I'm not sure if that's a limitation 
of Gtk or just that particular interface.

        Have you tried Escape with a modifier such as Shift, Control or Alt?
