For some reason - I tried to investigate a couple years abo - the post-commit hook script doesn't always run. It mostly keeps up though so I've tagged it low priority. What you can do before a web update is make a commit to __version__.py with an approx. revision > than that of the latest real revision, but < the revision that will be assigned to that commit to keep the post-commit hook from potentially being confused.
