Bava Metzia 086: Notes on redacting the Mishnah.
Barry Epstein <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asked:
1. My Artscroll notes say that Rebbi and R' Nassan redacted the Mishnah.
If so, why does Rebbi get all the credit? Ask 100 Yeshivah boys who
redacted in and less than 5 would include R' Nassan.
2. Rashi is quoted as saying that there were additions to the Mishnah
after Rebbi and R' Nassan, but these were minor changes. What were these
changes and how was anyone allowed to do so?
3. Iggeres Rav Sherira Gaon is paraphrased as saying that there is also
controversy over whether the above 2 actually wrote it down or only edited
it orally and it was written down later. What's the story here?

The Kollel replies:
1. The Gemara which mentions Rebbi Nasan is in Bava Metzia 86a. Yet the
Gemara itself always refers to the Mishnah as the composition of Rebbi
(see, for example, Yevamos 43a, Megilah 9b).
Apparently, since the redaction was done in the Beis Midrash of Rebbi, and
Rebbi Nasan was the Av Beis Din there (see end of Horayos), he had a part
in the redaction. Nevertheless, since Rebbi instigated it and also had the
final word (see Rashi Bava Metzia 33b DH bi'Yemei), he is the true redactor.
2. Rashi (Bava Metzia 86a DH Sof Mishnah) does not write that later
generations made changes to what Rebbi wrote, but that only minor additions
would be added to the Mishnah after Rebbi. He might be referring to those
Mishnayos which mention personalities who lived after Rebbi, such as the
concluding Mishnayos of Sotah, Avos, Kinim, and Uktzin. (These are often
taken to be Beraisos rather than Mishnayos.)
3. Most Rishonim (see Rashi Bava Metzia 33b DH bi'Yemei) understand the
Gemara to mean that Rebbi did not write down the Mishnah, because it was
still prohibited to write Torah she'Be'al Peh in his days as the Gemara
implies in Gitin 60a. The Rambam (in his introduction) says that Rebbi
wrote it down. Rav Chaim Zimmerman Z'L (in Agra la'Yesharim) discusses his
opinion at length.
