The Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's scripture passage from both Revelation and Luke, speak to me
about the faithful who believe in the Lord. In the first passage,
John saw that great vision of 144,000 faithful with the name of God
the Father and God the Son upon their foreheads. No one but they
could learn the heavenly hymn praising God, having earned that right
by their faithful lives on earth. This faithful multitude kept their
faith in God in spite of many trials and tribulations while on earth.
Now they deserved to stand in the presence of the celestial throne.
The poor widow, in giving all she had - two small coins -
demonstrated her frame of mind and heart: faith in God and a generous
heart because she loved God so much. The attraction of material goods
dissolved in her faithful love of God. In comparison, the rich gave
merely from their excess, and with much fanfare.
How about ourselves? What camp will we belong to? Shall we give
grudgingly from our surplus wealth, seeking tax deductions and our
name on some soon-to-crumble cornerstone? Or shall we be like the
faith-filled widow, never passing up an opportunity to discern the
will of the Holy Spirit, giving generously of time, talent, substance
and opportunity as daily life presents itself?
O Merciful Lord,
Forgive us our sins
and grant us your grace,
that we may respond fully,
with a faith-filled heart always.
