A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
As the author of Hebrew's writes about faith, one today might ask:
"How does my faith measure against those of long ago?" During the
time of Christ we clearly see that Jesus gave His disciples plenty of
proof that he was the Messiah sent by God; but they, for the most,
part struggled with the understanding of all that they had seen and
heard. In Mark's Gospel, God himself declared directly to Peter,
James and John, that Jesus was His divine Son. They themselves saw
the physical evidence of the power of God, but in their own minds had
a hard time understanding it all.
We Christians today don't have all the same sort of physical proof
that the disciples of Jesus had; but we still have a very strong
reason for our faith. In some ways we have a deeper understanding
than the disciples did, because of our accumulated store of
historical knowledge. It is through the personal apostolic
transmission of their witness to the living God on earth that we owe
them our gratitude. It is through this knowledge that we drink
deeply, that faith may grow within our hearts.
Father, mighty King.
We join not only with the angels
to give to You praise,
But also with the ancients of old.
Amen
