A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

This passage is one of the most difficult passages in the New
Testament. It calls us to what seems an impossibly high standard of
behavior. In a world that is fallen and corrupt, how can we trust
enough to do all that Jesus requires of us?

How do we feed the poor when we are so often suspicious of them? You
may hear things in the media or in your office. People may say, "Oh,
she just wants more welfare money..." You know the kind of thing. How
can we serve when we have so negative an attitude?

We need to pray to Mother Teresa of recent memory and ask for her
eyes. With the eyes of Mother Teresa we will not see the person who
is out for all they can get. We will see Jesus. We will not see the
person rightfully imprisoned, we will see Jesus.

And if we see Jesus, what response other than love can we give? Let
us ask for the assistance of all the saints who have toiled for souls
before us. Let us recognize our own neediness before God, and move
beyond our neediness to service. Let us give as Jesus would have us
give.
