A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Salvation comes from the cross. Unless the Son of Man be lifted up in
a pain, torture, and humiliation that will end only in death, the
destiny of humankind is doomed to defeat, dishonor, and annihilation.
When will we learn that victory lies only in submission to love, a
love that destroys our self-reliant pride and our stubborn insistence
that the cross has no place in human fulfillment? Why? Because the
way of the cross insists on total trust in the value of human
suffering, demands an admission that things are not what they seem,
that the one who would find his life must lose it. If God had found a
better way than the cross to save His creatures, He would have used
it.
To be saved, we must look at Jesus. Only by looking at the face of
our loving Savior at every crisis and decision in life will we ever
see that the wisdom of God is greater than the folly of humankind. A
steady, consistent habit of seeing Christ in all people, in all
present events, will give us a serenity, a peace, and a confidence
that the groanings of our world are part of the pain of God, still
giving birth to a new creation, a redeemed people, whom He will claim
for His own in victory on the last Day.
