A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's Gospel reading, I am struck by the fact that the
Centurion, a Roman official, not only approached Jesus, but
approached Him to ask for a cure for his serving boy, his servant.
The thing that seems so extraordinary is that this "pagan", by Jewish
standards, had such faith and compassion.
I guess Jesus was struck by it too, for He rewarded him with a
healing. It is a lesson for all of us, who have inherited our
Catholic identity and often think and act that because of it, our
behavior and approach to the Lord is better than others. Let us do a
little self-inventory and recognize where we, the "natural heirs of
the kingdom", might be falling short. Where have we lacked care and
concern for the small, the lowly, the sick? Where have we been
lacking in faith. When is the last time we have invoked the healing
name of Jesus?
