A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Today's Gospel is a wonderful example of the mercy of Jesus in
calling sinners to Him. The Pharisees complain to the disciples about
Jesus spending time in the company of tax collectors and 'sinners'.
But Jesus' response is clear: He hasn't come to call the
self-righteous, but sinners. At different points in our lives, many
of us may have put on our 'self-righteous' hat, admonishing the
behaviour of others, judging others for what they have/have not done.
Indeed on other occasions we may have patted ourselves on the back
for our 'virtuous' behaviour, complacent in our attitudes and our
beliefs. By wearing our self-righteous cap we lose sight of the fact
that we too are sinners, that we often fall short of meeting the
challenges of our Christian faith. It is only in our search for
humility, in acceptance of our brokenness and sinfulness that Jesus
can fully enter our lives and transform us for the good.

     O Jesus,
let us always have need of you
so that we may grow in the path of holiness and salvation.
          Amen.
