A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's first reading we hear how God commissioned Moses as the
emissary of the Israelites, to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let
God's people go. Understandably Moses doubted his suitability for
such a monumental task and questioned God saying, "Who am I that I
should go to Pharaoh...."
God's reply is notable and one that we hear echoed many times
throughout both the Old and New Testament. Namely, God promises to be
with those who trust and love Him, giving them power and authority
beyond their natural ability. In a similar way we hear Jesus saying
in today's Gospel that what the clever and learned fail to
comprehend, is understood by mere children.
What is the common thread that runs through both these situations?
It is that of God's grace and the consequences of acceptance of
grace. God is always ready to shower down His supernatural gifts on
those who rely on Him -- who recognize their own inadequacy and His
supreme and almighty power.
Let us then recognize the preeminent importance of humility (knowing
as St. Teresa of Jesus said, who we are and who God is.) Then, with
this clear and authentic understanding, may we approach the throne of
mercy and love with great confidence knowing that God will hear and
answer us -- who are so little and helpless -- who need Him so much.
"I praise thee, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst reveal the
mysteries of the kingdom to the little ones." (see: Matthew 11:25)
