A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's First Reading we hear how Moses' face became radiant after
conversing with God on Mount Sinai. Although Moses was unaware that
anything like that happened, those who saw him knew that something
extraordinary had occurred. The same might be said of anyone who has
a true encounter with the holiness of God - they will be transformed,
different, changed.
The Jews concept of holiness was so profound that for them to see the
holiness of God reflected in Moses was frightening. In many respects
we do not have an adequate appreciation of holiness, but instead
interact with familiarity and indeed sometimes lack of sufficient
reverence for things holy. Jesus has made His Father so known and so
present to us that we dare call Him "Our Father."
Let us not allow this great privilege to make us careless, but
instead inspire in us the desire to give fitting witness to the
holiness we have encountered through Christ, in His Word, His Church,
His Sacraments. This doesn't mean we "glow in the dark" as some
jokingly say, but that we reflect what we have seen, touched, felt,
heard and have come to believe through faith.
