A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

God always seems to choose the weakest of instruments to accomplish
His powerful Will. Take Gideon, for instance. One who was considered
lowly and insignificant. There was no danger here that anyone would
give credit to anyone but the Lord for the stunning victory over the
Midianites. When will we truly believe that the Lord can do wonders
through us if only we put ourselves completely in His hands. What
holds us back? Is it an awareness of our sinfulness, our past
failures? God will melt away our fears if only we are humble and
courageous.

Today, on the feast of St. Pius X, we express gratitude to God for
this "Pope of Frequent Holy Communion." It was he who emphasized the
doctrine that the Holy Eucharist is not a reward for virtue, but
medicine for the weak. With the power of this Bread of Life, we, like
Gideon, can exert power over evil -- not through our strength, but
through God's.
