A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The day after the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Church
celebrates the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Entrance Antiphon at
today's mass recalls the words of Simeon to Mary: "Behold, this child is
destined for the fall and the rise of many in Israel....and thine own soul a
sword shall pierce." - Luke 2:34-35 (Douay-Rheims version)

Imagine it! Mary, sinless and innocent as she was, would have her heart
pierced! Indeed, even Jesus, innocent as He was, was asked by the Father to
suffer a life of sadness, pain and an excruciating death -- all because of
the disobedience and the sins of humanity. Mary in her perfection, both
spiritually and humanly, shared her life in Christ by accepting the
heart-wrenching sorrow of her divine Son's sacrifice.

We too, feeble and sinful as we are, can learn by the example of obedience
seen in Jesus and Mary. If we wish to follow Jesus, if we consent to be as
much like Him as Mary was, then we too must accept sorrow and suffering in
our life in reparation for our many sins and those of the world.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
make my heart like unto thine.
