A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Increase Our Faith
St. Thomas Aquinas once noted that the only thing we can do on our
own is to refuse God's grace. The apostles began to recognize this
when they asked God to increase their faith.
We too need to turn to God in prayer. We don't increase our own
faith by prayer. We don't move forward by our own trying. We move
forward not by our own motion, but by the motion of God. Perhaps the
best way to think about it is as a boat. We must place ourselves
into the current (our initial act of will) but it is God's will that
propels us forward.Once started we can choose to move back to the
shore or we can continue in the eddies created by God. We must ask
Him always to move us forward. Only in that way can we progress in
prayer.
Thus every day we should put ourselves in the place of the apostles.
We can pray to Jesus, "Lord, increase our faith." And we can rest
assured that God will increase our faith.
