A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Both scriptural readings today reflect the Christian's need to place
faith above external practices and appearances. Regretfully, we still
see much of the opposite, just as in the times of Jesus. It seems
that in our "advanced" civilization, external appearances have taken
on an even greater role. Perhaps we have taken on such personal
pride, mistakenly trying to "keep up with the Joneses". Or perhaps
our spiritual balance has become so lop-sided that our priorities in
life are completely misplaced.

Jesus called the Pharisees 'fools' for their behavior. He even went
so far as to say that giving away our riches would wipe our souls
clean. St. Paul declared that only faith, which expresses itself
through love, accounts for anything.

Let us learn from these cues left for us long ago, and examine all
our motives carefully to see the extent of our own self-delusion. Let
us see if we can find our mustard seed-sized faith, lost somewhere in
the thorny thickets of our pride. Let's get real! Let's get a life!
Let us begin today!
