A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's readings are filled with joyful hope. The great prophet of
the Babylonian Exile, responding to God's call to comfort and to
strengthen the down-hearted Jewish slaves, wrote, in God's name, a
wonderfully consoling message. He tells them that those who hope in
the Lord will soar as with eagle's wings; they will soar and not grow
weary. Not only for them, but also for us are those words directed.
In our own times, we are weary, disillusioned, and cynical. Will the
world not ever be free of terrorism and war? If only we make Jesus
the core and center of our lives, if only we make Him who is the
"desire of the everlasting hills" the object of our love, our
obedience, and our allegiance, then we will know freedom from fear.
God has promised it!
Today we also celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Devotion
to her from the 16th century to the present is the single-most
powerful influence on faith in our hemisphere. Let the fragrance of
those lovely flowers which, with her own hands she placed in the
cloak of Juan Diego, float ever so gently into our prayers today, and
may the picture which Mary painted of herself without brush stroke or
flaw, draw our eyes out of our darkness to the light and splendour of
Her Son, Jesus.
