Title: Meditation: Saturday, December 22, 2001

The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, December 22, 2001
    The Third Week of Advent

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Samuel 1:24-28
    1 Samuel 2:1,4-8
    Luke 1:46-56

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The readings of the day focus on two women, Anna, the wife of Elcana
and our Blessed Mother. Anna was barren and prayed for a child. She
vowed that if she could have a child, she would offer him to the
service of God. Her wishes were granted and Samuel was born. Her
prayerful praise sounds much like what we know as Mary's song: "The
Magnificat". We too, have much for which we can offer joyful praise
to God, that is, our creation, redemption and many spiritual and
material gifts.

Consideration might be given as to whether our own 'magnificat' is a
statement which reflects who we are, or is it still a question.

Can we state with assurance "my soul proclaims the greatness of the
Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior".

Do those around us on a day-to-day basis recognize the Spirit of God
in us and in our actions?

Are we a joyful people?

Living our Christianity is a day-to-day, minute-to-minute challenge;
but one we are not facing alone. We can always ask for the grace and
strength of God. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

    O Come,
         King of the nations,
source of your Church's unity and faith:
save all mankind, your own creation!    (Saturday's "O Antiphon")

- Joan of Jesus, ocds
