A Reflection on Scripture from Christmas Mass during the day:
"In the Beginning was the Word...."
In the beginning -- both in the beginning of the universe, and in the
beginning of our salvation -- was the word. God spoke the word of
creation and all was. But the word we can cherish and meditate upon
today is the word that came from a simple peasant woman living under
an oppressive regime in an uncertain time. Her great word, "Let it be
done unto me as you have said." Today we celebrate the fruit of that
wonderful word: The Word.
God's great gift to us was generously given through a woman, through
a person, through a word of consent. He spoke a word, and her word
replied. No, think of it more as singing. God started the beautiful
song of creation and of salvation, and Mary brought to it the
sweetness, harmony, and light that resulted in this day, in this
great event, the Birth of the Lord.
He who was called "Wonder, Counselor, Mighty God, the Prince of
Peace," is born today. "For unto us a child is born, for unto us a
son is given." Praise be to God and all joy and thanksgiving. God has
given so much and He gives us once again this day that celebrates the
birth of the Word -- the Word in the sense of the promise -- the
promise fulfilled. "For unto you is born this day in the City of
David a savior which is Christ the Lord."
All peace and joy to you this Christmas.
